When creating a retro, vintage inspired logo or branding one must include some type of script font… it's totally necessary. It gives those strong, bold sans-serif capital letters a bit of friendliness. These script fonts can't really be used by themselves. Well they can, but they won't be balanced without a bit of sturdy, self esteem… that's why you rarely see them on their own. You kinda need both of an authority figure with a bit of playfulness slash organic cursive lettering in your hipster creations… and I want to get this straight… I hate the term “hipster”. I actually dislike anyone coining something as hipster. It's so easy to subject stuff to a popular phrase it really disgusts me. The reason hipster has become such an easy to use phrase is because we're living in such a culture that it's totally devoid of it's own identity. People seek some sort of authenticity and the easiest way is to achieve that is to resort to replicating the designs of years gone bye, where products where made… well, just better.
With that being said, I have been a fan of retro/vintage products and design since I was young. I was born in the 70's to hippie parents who were born in the era where things were well-made. I was brought up listening to oldies, singing them in shower and building old cars. I have a love for vintage furniture, cars, design, etc. I love seeing designers producing these retro-style script fonts. They are totally appreciated and I can understand fully the meaning behind them and the need for them in today's culture. They give designs that real, authentic feeling. I get it. And I love it. So, as lover of fonts, I've posted 14 retro/vintage style fonts that I really like. One of my favorites is Selfie. I am planning on creating more posts on vintage-style fonts in the future. Let me know what you think.
